What is the significance of Vassa's work?
Most important, his autobiography, political stance, and public figure in his day as an African, who come to identify as being Igbo, a concept born in the diaspora, who articulated the strategy to use abolish the slave trade, to arose public opinion which in the long run would lead to the emancipation of the enslaved population. He therefore stands as a role model, an articulate, intelligent man whose experience in slavery was unusual, not typical, but his skills in observation make his commentaries full of brilliant insights.
